Get on the path to employment

Woman at a computerRLSB has launched a number of projects dedicated to helping people with visual impairments develop their skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

Basic skills are an essential part of any individual’s life. Writing a letter, understanding a written or audio document, calculating a household budget or working with basic computer programs are just some of the skills that many take for granted, but which can present huge barriers to people desperate to interact with society and lead independent lives.

We are currently offering two courses to blind and visually impaired people from 16 years old upwards:

Basic skills for life

Over 10 sessions, you will be given guidance and advice on literacy/numeracy skills that are important in everyday life and work, such as:

  • Expressing yourself through writing
  • Writing information clearly
  • Reading/listening for important information
  • Working with money
  • Calculating measurements
  • Time management
  • Using basic computer programs to produce documents

Over 12 sessions, you will receive advice and guidance on a range of scenarios which you may encounter in the workplace involving literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. These would include:

  • Writing up reports and understanding forms
  • Passing on accurate information and instructions to others
  • Working with money
  • Understanding statistics
  • Creating and maintaining databases and spreadsheets
  • Formatting documents to a particular look/design
  • Using presentation software
  • Computer file management (attaching files to emails, deleting files etc)
  • These are just some of the skills which the RLSB will equip beneficiaries with. We are committed to helping beneficiaries to realise their potential and to go on into their lives with confidence in their basic skills
