Independence
For a number of new students coming to Dorton College it is often the first time away from home. For some this is exciting, for others it can be quite an anxious time. Keeping in contact with family and friends is as important to us as it is to you and we encourage visitors to the College.
The Life Skills Team is here to help and support you to settle in. You will also have a named Key Worker who will meet you for weekly one-to-one sessions but will also ensure that you know who else is on the team so there will always be someone on duty who you know. Your keyworker will work with you to ensure that you are able to perform common life tasks, and even if you are blind or partially sighted there are techniques and equipment available to help you in performing these tasks. Examples of equipment that are specially adapted for the visually impaired are Talking Microwaves, colour detectors to identify the colour of a dress, and speaking scales for cooking.
Life Skills Tutors and Care Assistants are also responsible for helping you to organise your leisure time. There will be lots of activities on site as well as in the local community. Students run a chess club, drama club, karaoke nights, pool tournaments, indoor hockey, cricket and football matches to mention but a few.
