Developing skills for independent living

School pupil in independent living class learning to boil an eggChildren are encouraged to develop not only the necessary academic skills but also skills for independent living to empower them to live within a sighted world through:

  • Coherence A broad and balanced education which prepares children for the challenges of adult life
  • Continuity Planned programmes of transition through the four key stages of the National Curriculum that reveal children's true potential
  • Partnership A fundamental commitment to enter into active dialogue with the child, their parents/guardians and other key stakeholders to determine and respond to their needs
  • Progression Design of programmes that are systematically planned to develop rather than duplicate a child's experience
  • Quality Considerable emphasis is given to the design and effectiveness of children's Individual Education Plans

Careers Advice is an integral component of the PSHE curriculum for Key Stage 3 & 4 and is vital to transitional development in Years 9 to 11. Summer Work Experience placements for Year 11 are also arranged by our Employment Service.
