Legacies

Image of girl standing on green grass with her arms in the airThe RLSB relies heavily on income from legacies in order to continue its vital work.

The support from those who give legacies to the RLSB can never be underestimated and we are very grateful to those who have already mentioned us in their Will.

Please, if you can, after making provision for your family and friends, do consider leaving a gift to the RLSB in your Will. Any sum left, however large or small, will be used to make a difference for the benefit of generations to come.

Types of legacy

There are several ways in which you can leave a gift in your Will, including:

  • Residuary legacy
A residuary legacy is a gift of all, or part, of what is left after all other legacies, debts, tax and costs have been paid. Gifts of residue are especially welcomed by beneficiaries (including charities) because, unlike pecuniary legacies, they are not devalued over time by inflation.
  • Pecuniary legacy
A pecuniary legacy is a gift of a specified sum of money.
  • Specific legacy
A specific legacy is a gift of a specified item such as a painting, a piece of jewellery or a car.

Why should I leave a legacy to the RLSB?

Derek MedhurstDerek Medhurst, a Quality and Efficiency Consultant, has pledged a legacy to us and explains why:

"There are a few reasons why I support the RLSB. I was invited to help the Society professionally and this involvement made me think more deeply about sight and quickly made me realise that I wanted to do something over and above my working support. I thought back to the blind person I had worked with in the past: what an able member of our team he had been. He wasn't a special case, he simply turned up every day and did his job really well. I have since learned that 75% of blind and partially sighted people never work.

So, as I was updating my Will anyway, and having seen the charity in action, I decided to make space for the RLSB. All I needed to do was give my solicitor the charity's name, registered charity number and address - it was very easily built in".
