Dorton House Nursery

Nursery child wearing a blue jumper and looking in a mirrorThe RLSB's Dorton House Nursery caters for blind or partially sighted children aged between 2 and 5 years old, who may also have additional needs.

Family Support, advice and information is also available through the Nursery. Parents of children who are blind or partially sighted can also drop-in to work and play with their children in our well equipped rooms under the guidance of Nursery staff.

Based in the Brian Johnston Centre, a purpose built self-contained unit on the Dorton campus, the main ethos of the Nursery is early intervention through assessment of an individual child's needs.

Curriculum

We work towards the Early Learning Goals and offer a rich multi-sensory curriculum catering for a range of needs that includes:

  • Individual and small-group work to aid early learning, communication skills and confidence
  • Dark and light sensory rooms for visual stimulation and assessment of vision
  • Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy
  • Mobility training for all ages and at all stages of development
  • Skills for independent living throughout the day, including during meal times and refreshment breaks
  • Weekly environmental outings within the local community
  • Swimming in a specially built training pool

   Flexibility

We have good links between our specialist provision and mainstream nurseries and ensure that communication between the two aids the development of the child.

Success Stories

Nursery child sitting on his mothers lap and smilingDorton House Nursery has long held a reputation for excellence, but its staff were somewhat surprised to receive an internet request from Egypt about a young boy with a visual impairment. Three year old Ozy's mother says "we felt that the RLSB was the only place able to provide the expertise and environment that Ozy needs to develop. He is so happy now, and it's very rewarding to watch his progression."
