Success Stories - Dorton College

Louise, age 23

Student wearing a blue jumper and using a computerLouise was born with Senior Locum Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects her eyes and kidneys. She is photophobic (she can only see 4.5m ahead of her during the day but 6.5m at night), has tunnel vision and is colour-blind. Having undergone a kidney transplant in 2001 and a series of major operations, including a double hip replacement in 2005, Louise remains determined to complete her studies and pursue a career in child care.

She completed her compulsory education in mainstream schools and although she struggled through a lack of support tailored to her visual impairment Louise successfully achieved 5 Grade C passes at GCSE. Her enrolment at the Society arose from a discussion with a Careers Advisor who unfortunately informed her that she wouldn't receive the support she needed from a mainstream college and suggested she contacted the RLSB.

In 2003 Louise started boarding at DCFE and enrolled with West Kent College, Tonbridge, to study a CACHE Certificate in Child Care and Education (the RLSB works in partnership with 3 local colleges to provide supported learning, thus ensuring choice and promoting diversity). After a year's study Louise successfully completed her course and is now studying for her CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education.

Louise says "It wasn't until I enrolled at DCFE after I finished my compulsory education that I realised how much support and guidance was available to me. Before I started my childcare course I hadn't received any help with my education and I certainly struggled. Now I'm at DCFE I have tailored support which has helped me to achieve a Distinction in my Certificate and I am even more determined to complete my studies and pursue a career in childcare."

During her time at the RLSB Louise has also been keen to offer her help with the Society's fundraising efforts and can often be seen shaking buckets, even when it's pouring with rain!
