Children and Young People's Services
As well as providing specialist educational services through our Nursery, School and College, we are working with communities across London and the home counties, developing community based services for children and young people who are blind or partially sighted. We are keen to ensure that children and young people have access to services which will allow them to fully engage within their own communities.
VIP's in Transition
The Royal London Society for the Blind (RLSB), VIPs in Transition Project is a three year Children in Need funded project. It is community focused, working across the East London boroughs of Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets.
Equality of Opportunity
This RLSB project effectively brings together visually impaired young people aged 14-18 from varying cultural, ethnic and class backgrounds, supporting the development of their independent living skills and self awareness.
Timetable
The projects run on a fortnightly basis and offer a range of one-to-one group sessions, social activities and events. Our cycle day (pictured above) was just one of our many successful activities!
Stepping Out
Young people are encouraged to step out of their local districts and meet potential friends as the projects open its doors at various venues across the boroughs. Our 'open door policy' is key to our central focus of promoting independence and awareness.
Personal Development
The project, including all activities and events are free to registered young people. All young people who are registered onto the project are offered a 'person centred plan' of action to support their individual development.
They have the opportunity to have their plans reviewed every 6 weeks and the action plans take into consideration every young person personal capabilities. This ensures that the project's open door policy is both sustainable for its target group and that members are ready for the potential life changing experiences that they may encounter through their development.
Working in Partnership
VIPs In Transition is a visually impaired intergrated youth service. We work closely with specialist departments and organizations to implement choice for our young people. The choice to engage in employment, college courses, sporting opportunities and career opportunities to a name a few.
