Christmas treeA group of blind and partially sighted carol singers has been awarded a valuable extra singing slot at Trafalgar Square next Christmas, following disruption to their 2011 fundraising event.

As reported here, the singers were caught up in a police operation to contain a demonstration at the London landmark, just before Christmas. Violence flared as a mob up to a thousand strong, protesting at the election results in the Democratic Republic of Congo, clashed with police.

The operation to contain the demonstration ensured that the takings from the annual carol singing event were reduced by 70% on the takings for 2010. The money is raised to support the activities of former and current pupils of RLSB’s Dorton House school for blind and partially sighted young people in Sevenoaks, Kent.

Following strong representations to the Mayor of London’s office, City Hall officials have said they would be happy to offer the group an additional slot – giving the RLSB two opportunities to showcase their singing talent and raise vital funds.
